How Latisse Works
The process of how the active ingredient in Latisse works isn’t completely known. What’s known is that it lengthens the life cycle of the eyelashes.
This causes them to grow for longer periods of time and increases the number of hairs. A study done over 16 weeks showed that average eyelash length increased by approximately 25%, darkness increased by 18 percent, and fullness increased by an astounding 106%.
The drug is FDA approved, meaning it is safe to use for its intended purpose for most people. Latisse can have some undesirable side effects, such as dry eye and darkening of the eyelid skin.
But these cases are uncommon and will reverse if treatment is stopped.
How to Use Latisse
Latisse requires a prescription to take it. It is applied topically onto your upper lash line using the provided applicator.
You simply dab the prescribed amount on the upper lid only. It will spread naturally onto the lower lid as you blink.
Never apply it directly to the lower lash line. Be sure to clean your face well before beginning the process. This means removing any makeup in or around your eyes.
You will apply the solution every night for 3 to 4 months, after which you will change it to every 2 days. Latisse requires constant use. Your eyelashes will return to their normal state if you do not keep up with treatment.
While you should always be careful while putting things in your eye, reports have not shown that getting Latisse in your eye is a big problem. You should not reuse applicators, as you can cause serious eye infections even after only one reuse.
Latisse can cause unwanted hair growth in other areas it reaches, so be careful when applying it.
Beware of Imitators
You may notice serums in beauty stores promising the same results as Latisse. These products often use a hormone-like substance. This is a prostaglandin that is similar to a bimatoprost called isopropyl cloprostenate.
These are not FDA approved, which means the possible side effects and general safety is not known or proven. Latisse is the only FDA-approved treatment for increasing eyelash volume.
